Doctors and scientists have come to finally recognize what we have always known. There is a deep connection between our psychology or mental state and our physical well being. Physical and psychological health are deeply related and interdependent. Anxiety, depression, negative attitudes and beliefs cause stress and vice versa and perhaps as many as 50-75% of all health problems are caused by or exacerbated by mental stress. Gratefulness, relaxation, love and connection to others both humans and animals relieve stress and bring balance to our body and mind. Psychological stress can suppress the immune system and make us more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections, high blood pressure, heart disease, ulcers, hypoglycemia, muscular skeletal disorders, sleep and sexual dysfunction and possibly even cancer. Learning how to destress is of paramount importance for our psychological and physical health. Numerous techniques to destress include exercise, meditation, massage, deep breathing, yoga, tai chi, chi gong, visualization and psychological counseling.
